Shot, Betrayed, and Left in Deadly Danger: California Man Accused of Killing His Half-Brother and Turning on Gas Burners While Children Slept Inside

A quiet California apartment complex became the scene of a nightmare just days before Christmas — a crime so cold, investigators say it endangered not only one life, but two innocent children left sleeping in the aftermath.

Authorities allege that Zackary A. Brodowski, 32, fatally shot his own half-brother, Aaron Richard Rivera, 36, inside a Redlands apartment in the early hours of December 23 — then fled the scene after turning on the home’s gas stove burners, leaving Rivera’s young children asleep inside what police describe as a potential death trap.

Officers were dispatched to the apartment after receiving frantic reports of gunfire. Inside, they discovered Rivera dead from apparent gunshot wounds, his life ended violently in what investigators believe was a sudden and deliberate attack.

As detectives worked the scene, family members pointed them toward a chilling possibility: the killer was someone Rivera knew — someone he trusted.

Surveillance footage from the apartment complex allegedly captured Brodowski sprinting from the building moments after the shooting, climbing into a silver 2008 Ford Focus and speeding away, leaving behind chaos, bloodshed, and two children still asleep in the apartment.

Police say what Brodowski allegedly did next elevated the crime from murder to something even more horrifying.

Investigators claim he deliberately left the stove’s gas burners turned on, filling the apartment with the risk of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning — while Rivera’s children remained inside, unaware of the danger surrounding them.

Hours later, Brodowski was tracked down and arrested without incident at his home in Calimesa. During a search of the residence, detectives say they recovered a firearm believed to be the murder weapon, along with clothing matching what Brodowski allegedly wore during the shooting.

Now, Brodowski sits behind bars at West Valley Detention Center, held without bail, facing charges of murder and attempted murder. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he has entered a plea or secured legal representation.

For investigators, the case is not just about a killing — but about what they describe as a shocking disregard for human life that extended beyond the intended victim.

For the children left sleeping in that apartment, survival came down to timing and luck.

And for a family already torn apart by violence, the days leading into the holidays will forever be marked by a single, devastating night — one where betrayal, rage, and calculated danger collided under the same roof.
